May 8th, 2007 by Patricia Leone

What is a Mashup?

A mashup is a combination of two or more online services.

Google Maps

Google Maps is a service combining maps, business directory information, satellite imagery, street-level search, and driving directions. Google’s My Maps allows for customizable maps where any user with a google account can create, store and share their own maps. The user can add hot spots with web information, use a line tool to draw directions and use a shape tool to high light sections of the map.

10 Things you can do with Google Maps

  1. put a street map on your website
  2. put a satellite map on your website
  3. put up a map on your website with hotel and restaurant locations
  4. create a map with driving directions directly to a parking lot
  5. create a map with information flags marking just the locations of interest to your visitors
  6. create a map that uses zip code information to place flags to identify where incoming freshman are from
  7. create a map that uses zip code information to place flags to identify where our alum are living
  8. create a map from your vacation and put flags and pictures of the places you visited
  9. create a map for a class and use flags to identify places of interest and put pictures and websites on each flag with further information
  10. use the Link to this page button to get the url of the map so you can share it

Thanks for an informative session Pat. I wanted to share with you and other folks who are interested the Google map I worked on for our wedding clients.

As you can imagine instructing outside client’s where to park is a real challenge for the Events and Scheduling Office. This resource is a great help!
